Johnie Scot
: This ballad is reportedly based on an incident in 1679 when a Scot, James Macgill, killed Sir Robert Balfour of Denmiln in a duel. Macgill went to London to ask Charles II for a pardon. Charles had him fight an Italian gladiator. During the ensuing match the Italian leapt over Macgill. The second time he did so Macgill ran him through with his sword. Macgill was then knighted. The version here is a variant found by Cecil Sharp in the Appalachian Mountains.

Print1768.gif (6337 bytes)The history of the Howell family's migration patterns can be learned from a review of the history of United States public land and the policy that evolved from it.

Congressman David Howell of Rhode Island complained that America's new western territories were "the most complicated and embarrassing Subject before Congress since peace has taken place." Deliberation over what to do with the territory continued for several years, but on May 18, 1785, a burst of activity resulted in a proposal for the orderly settlement of the western public lands. Rufus King of Massachusetts, a key figure in the debate, made many of the notations that appear in the document's margins. Congress adopted the final version of the Land Ordinance of 1785 on May 20.
