History

Allamakee County, Iowa A brief history

Early Immigration from Ireland to Wexford, Allamakee County, Iowa

Fr. Thomas Hore (born 1796) went to Birchfield College in Kilkenny around 1816. Dr. Patrick Kelly, president of that college, was appointed bishop of Richmond, Virginia and brought Thomas Hore with him and ordained him there. He remained there for about six years and then returned home. Later, in 1850, he led a group to the U.S. and founded the parish of Wexford, Iowa. He is looked upon as founder of at least six other existing parishes in Allamakee County and several outside the county. He returned to Ireland in 1857 and died as parish priest of Cloughbawn. He died in 1864.

Here is a very good link: From Wexford, Ireland to Wexford, Iowa by Hilary Murphy

Where our Keenan ancestors came from in Ireland is not yet known.

Immigration, The Journey to America-The Irish

The Irish were unfortunately divided during much of the nineteenth century and was therefore helpless in the face of its grave problems. The Act of Union of 1803 incorporated the island into British polity, but was useless in easing the difficult situation of the people.. With an overly large population as the result of the Napoleanic Wars, the Irish soon became impoverished. And with the religious prejudice of Protestant Masters to the Catholic Irish, plus political subordination, many had no alternative by to emigrate to the United States for relief. Between 1820 and 1860, the Irish were never less than a third of all immigrants. The British Passenger Acts attempted to deflect the immigration from the British Isles to Canada instead of the U.S., making the fare a cheap 15 shilling compared to the 4 or 5 pound fare to New York. Many Irish soon found it convenient to take the affordable trip to Canada, where they could buy cheap fares to the U.S., or cheaper yet, they could walk across the border. By 1840, the Irish constituted nearly half of all entering immigrants, and New England found it self heavily foreign born. By 1950, the Irish consisted of one fifth of all foreign born in the originally homogenous region.

In 1845, the great potato rot touched off a mass migration. The disaster eliminated the sole subsistence of millions of peasants, thrusting them over the edge of starvation. For five weary years, the crops remained undependable, and famine swept through the land. Untold thousands perished, and the survivors, destitute of hope, wished only to get away (Handlin, 1972).

The only mode of escape was emigration. Starving families that could not pay landlords faced no alternative but to leave the country in hopes of a better future. And thus the steadily scaling number of Irish who entered the U.S. between 1820 and 1830 skyrocketed in the 1840s, nearly 2 million came in that decade. The flow persisted increasingly for another five years, as the first immigrants began to earn the means of sending for relatives and friends. The decade after 1855 showed a subside in the movement, but smaller numbers continued to arrive after the Civil War. Altogether, almost 3.5 million Irishmen entered the U.S. between 1820 and 1880.

Emigrating to the U.S. wasn't the magical solution for most of the immigrants. Peasants arrived without resources, or capital to start farms or businesses. Few of them ever accumulated the resources to make any meaningful choice about their way of life. Fortunately for them, the expansion of the American economy created heavy demands for muscle grunt. The great canals, which were the first links in the national transportation system were still being dug in the 1820s and 1830s, and in the time between 1830 and 1880, thousands of miles of rail were being laid. With no bulldozers existing at the time, the pick and the shovel were the only earth-moving equipment at the time. And the Irish laborers were the mainstay of the construction gangs that did this grueling work. In towns along the sites of work, groups of Irish formed their small communities to live in. By the middle of the nineteenth century, as American cities were undergoing rapid growth and beginning to develop an infrastructure and creating the governmental machinery and personnel necessary to run it, the Irish and their children got their first foothold- on the ground floor. Irish policemen and firemen are not just stereotypes: Irish all but monopolized those jobs when they were being created in the post-Civil War years, and even today Irish names are clearly over-represented in those occupations (Daniels, 1990). Irish workmen not only began laying the horsecar and streetcar tracks, but were some of the first drivers and conductors. The first generations worked largely at unskilled and semiskilled occupations, but their children found themselves working at increasingly skilled trades. By 1900, when Irish American mend made up about a thirteenth of the male labor force, they were almost a third of the plumbers, steamfitters, and boilermakers. Industry working Irish soon found themselves lifted up into boss and straw-boss positions as common laborers more and more arrived from southern and eastern Europe- Italians, Slavs, and Hungarians.

In years after 1860, Irish Immigration persisted. More than 2.6 million Irish came in the decades after 1860. However, larger numbers of immigrants from elsewhere masked the inflow of Irish people. Those Irish who did continue to flow into the U.S. tended to settle in the already existing Irish communities, where Catholic Churches had been built, and cultural traditions were carried out. However materialistically poor they were, the Irish were rich in cultural resources, developing institutions that helped them face hardship without despair. Cultural events such as St. Patrick's Day were regarded by most Americans as evidence of the separateness of these immigrants, but helped hold the Irish culture together. Their desire for self-expression showed that the Irish understood their group identity. Poor as they were, they drew strength from a culture that explained their situation in the world and provided spiritual resources to face if not to solve the problem. Aside from the church, the most important media of that culture were the press and the stage. All Irish newspapers had either a nationalistic or a religious base, some published as church organs, other drawing support from patriotic societies. Their newspapers interpreted news, accommodated information, and printed popular poems and stories. The stage was even more appealing because it did not demand literacy, presenting to attentive audiences dramas as real as life but not as painful. By the late 1800s, the painful initial Irish transplantation into American society had ended. Second and third generation born and educated in the U.S. replaced the immigrants, but their heritage still stemmed from the peasants' flight from Ireland and of the hardships of striking new roots in the New World.

Keenan's of Unknown Ancestry

There appears to be a number of Keenan families in Allamakee county, IA. However, as of 1860, they were isolated in two specific areas: Lafayette and Jefferson townships.

  1. Lafayette Township

  1. Jefferson Township

Michael Keenan (1824-1874)

Naturalization
The naturalization papers of Michael Keenan and James Keenan are dated October, 1856, which indicates that they arrived in America no later than 1851 due to the 5 year waiting period for naturalization. Thus, there is a good possibility Michael and James are brothers or cousins as they are a few years apart in age and tended to live in adjacent farms.

Michael Keenan (age 36) & Mary Anne (Duffy) Keenan first appear in the 1860 census. Census image

After Mary Ann (Duffy) died in 1867, Michael remarried a widow named Mary (Whalen). Census Image. Mary Whalen was first married to Isaac Randolph in 1862. They had 3 daughters. Isaac died 1868 & Mary married Michael Keenan in December 1868. She then married John Gorman in 1877. Mary is listed in the Wexford Cemetery burial listing as Mary Keenan Gorman. No grave marker.

Michael Keenan and Mary (Whalen) Keenan had their last child, also name Michael Keenan, in 1873.

Michael Keenan died in 1874, leaving Mary (Whalen) a widow again.  However, Mary (Whalen) appears in the 1880 census re-married to a John Gorman.  Michael & Mary's son Michael Keenan, age 7, is also in the household. Source:  Joe Keenan, grandson of Edward Keenan.

Ann (?) Keenan (1825-    )

Ann Keenan, age 35, appears in dwelling 340/Family 353, which is next door to Michael Keenan, in the 1860 census. She may be a widow as there is a farm laborer in the household. This could suggest her husband was a Keenan and possibly related to Michael and James. The 6 year old, Rosey Keenan,  is very likely her daughter.

I found a "Rosey Riser", born 25 Sep 1866, died 11 Aug 1944 in the Lansing Ridge Cemetery in the Lansing township. Ann Keenan in the same age bracket at James and Michael, which may suggest that her husband may have been a brother or cousin to James and Michael Keenan.

James Keenan (1825-1906)

The naturalization papers of Michael Keenan and James Keenan are dated October, 1856, which indicates that they arrived in America no later than 1851 due to the 5 year waiting period for naturalization. James Keenan and Peter Jones were farm neighbors in Lafayette township, Allamakee Co, IA. 1860 censusJohn Hand was nearby (census page 49, dwelling 378 / family 375).  In 1872, James Keenan, Peter Jones and John Hand move from Allamakee county to the Great Oaks township in Palo Alto county, Iowa. The three men are noted as the early settlers in 1872. Beginnings...Early Settlers by Township 1869-1871John Hand appears in the Great Oak Twp., Palo Alto, Iowa 1880 Federal Census.

James Keenan and Elizabeth were the parents of Michael Keenan. Michael and Catherine Keenan were the parents of my grandfather, James W. Keenan, born in Great Falls, Montana. Michael and Catherine are living in the same household in the 1910 census along with my uncles Jas and Earl. My father, Marvin followed shortly thereafter and then Robert, Jack and Dick followed. A daughter (I believe named Catherine) died at an early age.   My cousin Sharon, daughter of Robert Keenan (son of James W. and Lillian) found a copy of the marriage certificate for our grandparents which provided this information: January 13,1905 in Anaconda, Montana; James W. Keenan - Son of Michael W. Keenan and Catherine E. Heffley, of  Emmettsburg, County of Palo Alto, Iowa. I can find Michael W., son of James, in the 1880 census of Great Oak and have clues leading to Onowa in 1883 (Birth certificate for Robert, son of James lists father's birthplace as Onowa) Ruthven in 1892 but because the 1890 census was destroyed and as yet, I have not been able to locate him in the 1900 census, I have no written record between 1880 and 1910. The 1910 census (Montana, Deer Lodge, Ananconda Township, 2nd Ward #13 sheet 8A)finds Michael and Catherine living with my Grandparents James W. and Lillian Keenan along with their two sons James D. (2) and Earl W. (1).   Michael and Catherine have been married for 29 years, making their marriage around 1881. Catherine is listed as age 50 (making her birth around 1860) and Michael is age 54 (making his birth around 1856). Catherine was born in Iowa, father was from Pennsylvania and her mother is from Ireland. Michael was born in Iowa, his father was from Ireland and mother from England. Since all of the information "fits" for Michael W. I'm  sure this is the same Michael born of James and Elizabeth shown in the 1860 census.  Source: Jim Keenan, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Jan-2004

Edward Keenan  (1852-1929)

Edward Keenan was born 1852 in St. Louis, not Dubuque, according to his death certificate. Edward Keenan died on 1929. This is the son of Michael Keenan (1824-1874). His mother was Mary Anne (Duffy) Keenan. Source:  Joe Keenan, grandson of Edward Keenan.

Patrick Keenan (1818-1878)

Early Keenan Pioneer in Allamakee County, Iowa

Although this Patrick Keenan is not likely connected to our Keenan family, this Irishman from Dublin has a colorful history.

Patrick Keenan, deceased, whose portrait adorns this work, was born in the county of Dublin, Ireland, in 1818. Emigrated to New Orleans, La., in 1844, where he remained about three years, including short stoppages at different points on the Lower Mississippi river. Early in 1847 he came north to Galena, Ill., where he engaged in mining and prospecting, also spending some time at Dubuque. Upon first concluding to stop at Galena, he had returned to New Orleans and brought up his sister and her husband, R. Cassidy, to that place. In the fall of 1847 he came into this county, which was then inhabited only by the Indians; selected a claim where the County Poor Farm now is, and returned to Galena. The following year he again came on, bringing his brother-in-law, Cassidy, with him, settled on his claim and began to improve it. In the spring of 1849, while out hunting for his cattle, he found himself down on Paint Creek, in Jefferson township., and being very favorably impressed with the situation of the land on the creek, and the prairie adjoining on the south, he concluded to abandon his former claim and locate on this land in Jefferson township.; and having his ax with him, as was his usual custom, he "blazed" a few trees so as to readily find the place again, and upon returning home immediately made preparations to remove to his newly selected claim, which he did the same spring, accompanied by his brother-in-law's family, and they were the first settlers in the township. He laid claim to nearly a section of land, and afterwards purchased more in the south part of that township and in Franklin township. This same season he met with an adventure one day, while down on the Yellow river, that showed the metal of the man. Being alone and unarmed, save with an ax, which he always carried to mark his way, he was suddenly confronted by two large black bears, one of which raised upon its hind feet and advanced upon him. Although knowing nothing of the habits of the animal at the time, Mr. K. stood his ground, faced his bearship and brandished his ax, and the bears seeing no evidence of fear on his part, finally themselves became frightened and made off. Mr. Keenan was married in July, 1854, to Miss Catharine Scanlan, a native of Upper Canada, who was born in 1836. Their children are: Richard F., Wm. M., Patrick H., Maggie A., Thos. J., John A., Mary T., Charles L. and Clement G., having lost three, Johana, Joseph and Albert J. Mr. Keenan died March 14, 1878, honored by all who knew him. His remains were deposited in the Cherry Mound cemetery, four prominent clergymen assisting in the ceremonies, which were very impressive, and were attended by a large concourse of people from far and near. He was a man of good judgment, firm and determined in character, and throughout his residence in this county he figured prominently as one of her most influential citizens. He leaves an estate of 700 acres of the best land in the township, which is carried on by Mrs. K., it being superintended by her son Wm. They are introducing some very fine stock upon the farm, having recently purchased three head of yearlings past for $640. History of Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties, Iowa, 1882, p. 507-508.

The Keenan families have a common neighbor, Timothy & Dorothy Russell. In the household is a "Mary Keenan", age 19, born in Missouri (circa 1851). Also is a 16 year old boy, "Larns Keenan", born in Iowa. Possibly their parents died and the Russell family took them in. The relationship of these Keenan's to the Keenan neighbors is unknown.
