• Nelle J. Howell (Obituary)
  PRATT - Nelle Jeanette Howell, 95, died Feb. 5, 2008, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.
  She was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Reading, the daughter of Clyde and Maud Piester. She attended Pratt High School. A resident of Pratt since 1987, she taught in one-room schools for two years and was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Croft "Sew and So" Club, Grace United Methodist Church, Coats, United Methodist Women, HDU, and volunteered at the Pratt County Historical Museum. On June 24, 1934, she married Clair B. "Jack" Howell. He died (1987). Survivors include: a son, Neil Howell, Syracuse; a daughter, Joann Eads, Green Mountain Falls, Colo.; a sister, Helen Schwarm, Pratt; four grandsons; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Wilcox; and a brother, Carl Piester. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, with Chaplain Fred Pinkerton presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Coats Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Grace United Methodist Church, Pratt County 4-H Foundation or Pratt County Historical Society, all in care of the mortuary.  Personal condolences may be left for the family at www.larrisonmortuary.com.

• KENTUCKY: Discovered the origins of Charlotta Brown (1801-1880) who married Robert Howell (1804-1864). Their son was James Madison Howell (1833-1914), father of Samuel Brady Howell (1861-1951).  Charlotta was the daughter of Wiley Brown (1769-March 1848) and Margaret (Peggy) Jent. Wiley Brown was the son of William Brown, Jr. who died in North Carolina about 1799. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. Wiley Brown, his older brother, Drury Brown, and a sister who married a Watson left North Carolina soon after their father died  and came to Allen County, Kentucky. The Watsons died young and their daughter was raised by Wiley Brown. Wiley and Drury Brown were large landowners in Allen County. Wiley settled on Long Creek and is believed to be buried at the Old Salem Church in Allen County. After William Brown, Jr. died, one of his sons, Charles W. Brown, stated the following in a sworn statement, filed in Henderson County, KY, swore that "my late father, Wm Brown deceased, a soldier in the North Carolina line in the War of the Revolution, sworn, and subscribed before the Honorable, the County Court of Henderson County, KY, this 27th Day of 8th Mo. 1832. - Charles W. Brown." The affidavit continued saying "that William Brown, my late father did enlist in the war - say 1775 or 6, for the term of 'during the war', and served on the regiment No (not recollected) under the command of Colonel (not recollected) of the North Carolina Line; and that he continued in the service aforesaid until the close of the war". • Research focusing on the origins of Charlotta Brown (1801-1880) who married Robert Howell (1804-1864). Their son was James Madison Howell (1833-1914), father of Samuel Brady Howell (1861-1951).  

April 2004

• Continued research on Francis Marion Howell and his son, Clifton A. Howell, Sr., who was on the 1897 OU (University of Oklahoma football team). 1897 was Oklahoma's third season and thier second undefeated season.  Vernon Parrington arrived in Norman to teach English. He had been a backup QB at Harvard, and had played as well at Emporia. OU's President Boyd put Parrington in charge of athletics, and thus became OU's first official Head Coach. Parrington organized the team and established 6 offensive plays that OU would use from 1897 through 1900. He introduced cross-blocking schemes (See play #3). The 1897 OU team consisted of:

1899: This was the first year that OU was scheduled to play Kansas University. The game was cancelled. KU notified OU that the KU football team had disbanded. There was considerable national furor over football because the game was so violent. A number of schools had stopped playing football (Stanford and California, and other colleges) because there had been a number of deaths and severe injuries. More schools would stop football until a number of rule changes occurred in 1905. 

February 2004

• Obituary of Francis Marion Howell to the Kansas chapter on the HISTORY section and the HOWELL FAMILY TREE. He was the first son of Young Howell (1806-1881), an early pioneer of Lincoln County, Missouri. Francis Marion Howell survived the Massacre of the Third M.S.M. Cavalry: Lincoln County troops killed by Frank & Jesse James and George Todd. He is buried in the Civil War veterans section of Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas. This is the first clue as to who his children listed in the obituary were.  He is the 4th Howell pioneer now know to have moved to Kansas from Missouri or Kentucky in the period from 1884 to 1893.

• Restructured the outline of the family tree portion of the PHOTO ALBUM so it is easier to understand the family line of those with photos.

• Added early photos of communities of Coats and Croft, KS to the COMMUNITY section of the PHOTO ALBUM page. Included is a photo of the CROFT COWBOY hometown basketball team which included Bud Howell & Pat Howell.  
• Claggett Homestead added to Missouri chapter in the HISTORY section and the PHOTO ALBUM pages. This the Claggett homestead which was built in the 1800's.  Thomas and Perlina (Howell) Claggett made this their home.  It was located in Lincoln County , Bedford Twp, Missouri near the Cuivre River.  The original land was acquired by Thomas J Claggett father of William Henry.  William Henry bought additional land to add to the original farm. Thomas J and Mary Ann Burdette came from Fauquier County, Virginia between 1837 and 1840.  Thomas was the son of Dr. Samuel Claggett a revolutionary war surgeon and Mary Ann was the daughter of Stephen Burdette.

• I have revised the HISTORY pages of GEORGIA and KENTUCKY pages with tons of new information. Note the new maps with the watercourses they acquired land on or near. With the new deed information we may also narrow down where old Raleigh lived in Allen County, KY. The early deeds only made mention of the watercourses as they did not have sections/townships back then.
  
  A few weeks ago I was contacted by some Janice Craft of Mississipi and Leo Little of Texas researching a WILLIAM LITTLE and a SAMUEL HOWELL that appeared on the early 1800 Georgia tax lists along with our ROLEY (RALIEGH) HOWELL. We have always known about the Samuel Howell but no clue who he was. I have been posting queries over the past few years on this Samuel Howell on the Georgia tax lists.  With the help of Leo and Janice (who have a professional genealogist in Salt Lake City also researching both the LITTLE and HOWELL families) we will hopefully come to some conclusions someday.  They seem to think that Samuel Howell could be the father of their Betsy Howell that married their William Little. The Little family migration route was GA, KY, MS then TX. 
  
  In addition to this Samuel Howell, there is a William Howell and a Betsy (Howell) Little that could very well be related to our Raleigh Howell. 
  The HOWELL's and LITTLE's all lived in the same general area of Franklin County, GA in the late 1700s-early 1800s. See GEORGIA tax, Deed & Court Records. They all migrated about the same time to Barren County, KY. Yes, Barren County. ALLEN COUNTY, KY was formed from parts of Barren County in 1815. Thus, when they landed in Kentucky around 1804-1805, the county line moved in 1815. 
  
  On the 1810 BARREN COUNTY, KY census, the Rolly (Raleigh) Howell, Samuel Howell and William Howell households are all adjacent to each other. William & Betsy (Howell) Little are only five households away from the Howell's on the census.   Samuel Howell was the oldest so he could be Raleigh, William and Betsy's father. The census indicates a son living in the Samuel Howell household. There is speculation that a Hudson Howell, could be a son of Samuel Howell.  It appears Hudson Howell migrated to Mississippi with the LITTLE family possibly after Samuel Howell may have died around 1816.  There was also a Jesse Howell in Franklin County tax lists but no clues yet if he is connected.
