Descendants of Raleigh Howell

Notes

9. Abraham Howell

Died from Civil War wounds.

Abraham Howell of the 37th EMM was a private. He was 40 years old when he was serving. This Abraham is referred to as Abram in Logan's letter to Polly. There was a descendant of Abraham
that submitted information to the LDS that also had his name as "Abram". - Kirby Ross

14. Mary Polly Howell

Logan's letter was to Polly Howell, ex-wife of Calvin Smith, soon to be
wife of her sister's widowed husband. Another Smith link is mentioned in the
letter --- Mary Smith, who would have been Mary Elizabeth Smith, daughter of
William Smith, Jr.

I will get with Robert Howell to compare notes on the Calvin Smith he
has married to Elizabeth Howell. However, my Calvin, the son of William
Smith, Sr. was undoubtedly the first husband of Mary Howell, daughter of
Samuel Howell. This from the Lincoln County Clerk and Recorder's files: "I,
Charles Wheler, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County Lincoln and
State of Missouri, certify that I solemnized the rites of matrimony between
Calvin Smith and Mary Howell, in the presence of Saml. Howell, Thomas East
and others, on the 20th day of February, 1851, in the County of Lincoln
aforesaid." Thomas East was married to Fanny Welty.
When Mary/Polly got her divorce in 1856, she was given custody of the
couple's son Samuel Thomas Smith (referred to as Thomas S. Smith in the 1860
census). Samuel for grandpa Samuel Howell, Thomas for uncles Thomas Smith
and Thomas East. Mary took back her maiden name after the divorce --- she is
listed in the 1860 census as Mary Howell. She is listed as living with her
father Samuel Howell. Right under her name is Thomas S. Smith, her son.
Samuel T./Thomas S. was apparently a handful. As an eleven year old,
his grandfather William Smith Sr. specifically cut him out of his will
because of his rudeness and disrespect. When his mother Mary/Polly married
Alexander Kennedy, she left teenager Samuel Smith behind with her father
Samuel Howell. Shortly before Mary married Alexander Kennedy, Calvin Smith
returned from the goldfields to try to woo her back. She rebuffed his
efforts and married Kennedy. Cal then set out for Dakota Territory and met
his destiny with the Indians.
After Calvin's demise, old man Samuel Howell was appointed guardian over
Samuel Smith. After Sam Howell became to ill to do it, Allen Howell was
appointed. This according to Lincoln County court files. For some reason,
this Calvin Smith/Mary Howell link has never, ever made it into the files of
any other researcher. Yet, the marriage record, the divorce record, the
William Smith Sr. will, and the Samuel Smith guardianship file in Lincoln
County tell the tale.

I note that Logan Howell's letter was sent to his sister
Polly Howell. Polly Howell, aka Mary Howell married into another branch of
my family in 1851. Her first husband, Calvin Smith, deserted her and her
child Samuel Thomas Smith around 1852 and headed for the goldfields of
California, Oregon, and Idaho. Polly divorced him in 1856. Mary took
Alexander Kennedy as her second husband in 1866. Family folklore had Calvin
Smith raping an Indian girl and then being caught by her people, and then
skinned and scalped alive. Whether this is true or not, it is a fact that
Calvin died in "Decota" Territory ca. 1869.

Calvin Smith

I note that Logan Howell's letter was sent to his sister
Polly Howell. Polly Howell, aka Mary Howell married into another branch of
my family in 1851. Her first husband, Calvin Smith, deserted her and her
child Samuel Thomas Smith around 1852 and headed for the goldfields of
California, Oregon, and Idaho. Polly divorced him in 1856. Mary took

skinned and scalped alive. Whether this is true or not, it is a fact that
Calvin died in "Decota" Territory ca. 1869.

Calvin never shows up on any of the Howell genealogy charts, but he was
without a doubt married to Polly Howell. Lincoln County recorded both the
marriage (Samuel Howell as witness) and the divorce. After Polly remarried,
old man Samuel Howell raised her son Samuel Thomas Smith. When Samuel Howell
became to old and sick to do it, Allen Howell, Polly's brother took over.

Melvin Prudence Unknown

My great-aunt Clara Kirby married Lewis Howell, grandson of Edward W. and Melvina Prudence Howell. They had 5 children, Robert J. (father to Lewis), James A., Gilbert W., & William E. Census records show that Edward's father was b. in Ga and his mother in Va. The 1850 Allen Co KY census shows two Howell men b. in Ga, and only one with a wife born in VA: James Howell b@1800. However, the 9 yr old male in the 1850 census has the initial F. (the census taker only used initials for anyone other than the head of household), but the 7 year old male has the initial W. I have not found this Howell household in the 1860 census yet. Any help with this family would be appreciated. Lewis and Clara Kirby Howell had one daughter Mary b.1930. The best I can determine is that Robert and Jennie L. Howell had the one son Lewis. The Howell's lived in the New Roe district in Allen County.
